The church of Saint George in Gdzwag stands in the middle of the village of the same name [Kıyıdüzü], on the west shore of Lake Van, near and to the north of Tadwan [Tatvan], at 38° 34’ N and 42° 22’ E.

Entrée de l’église, 2009 (Coll. privée).

It includes a large church measuring some 15.7 × 12.1 m and a primitive chapel whose barrel nave sets into the southeast corner of the larger church. Dated to the start of the 18th century by its typology and by an inscription from 1714, the church of Saint George is a cruciform triapsidial building inscribed within four central piers, and surmounted by a cupola without drum and four calottes, placed at the corners of the first and third bays. The old chapel, which communicates with the church, is 4.5 meters longer than the chevet and occupies the place of what would have been the southern apse.

Plan (Thierry, 1989, p.228)

The church of Saint George in Gdzwag was confiscated after the Great War. It was in relatively good condition until the 1970s, with the exception of the roof, already damaged, and was being used as a barn. It has received little maintenance since, but still has most of its covering slabs.

Thierry, 1989, 227-229.
